On the first of November, long before Halloween even existed, Catalans celebrated la castanyada, which comes from an ancient celebration that used to honor the dead. During this festivity you can eat castanyes, chestnuts in Catalan, as well as "panellets", a typical Catalan pastry done for this date. Panellets are small cakes in different shapes, normally round and made mainly of marzipan (almonds and sugar paste). They come from the 18th century and they were used as blessed food for religious celebrations. In addition to chestnuts and cakes the celebration consists in eating roasted boniatos (sweet potatoes) and drinking moscatell – a variety of sweet wine that comes from the muscatel ripe grapes.
